Designing Safe and Comfortable Horse Stalls

Space Matters
Horses need room to move, lie down, and turn comfortably within their stalls. Stall size should be tailored to the size and breed of the horse, with a standard recommendation of at least 12×12 feet for average-sized horses. Larger breeds may require more space to prevent stress or injury.

Ventilation and Airflow
Poor air quality can lead to respiratory issues and discomfort. Proper ventilation is essential in stall design, helping to regulate temperature, reduce ammonia buildup, and provide a steady flow of fresh air. Windows, vents, and open-top partitions are effective ways to achieve this.

Lighting for Comfort and Safety
Natural lighting is ideal for horse well-being, but artificial lighting should also be installed to support early morning or evening routines. Fixtures should be bright, safe, and positioned to avoid casting harsh shadows that might spook horses.

Flooring and Drainage
Comfortable, slip-resistant flooring makes all the difference. A solid base with proper drainage, combined with rubber mats or soft bedding, helps prevent hoof problems and makes cleaning easier for caretakers.
